Now that I've hiked from Maine to Georgia on the Appalachian Trail, finished composing "Walking Towards the Sun" and am about to head to Vancouver to defend the composition (it is my DMA thesis) against a crew of academics, I am planning a thru-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail.

"Walking Towards the Sun" is a series of musical meditations on my AT hike. It is as massive (ca. 9 hours) and idealistic as the Appalachian Trail. People tell me it transports them. I think that the music is an environment. By spending my time hiking in wilderness, I'm trying to internalize the experience so strongly that it inherently sinks into all of my work.

The next logical step seems to be to hike the Pacific Crest and write a second composition based on it. I'm thinking orchestra.

I'm leaving for Vancouver June 1st, taking the train. My thesis defense is June 6. Then I'm going to shop for an ice axe and head to the border of Washington and Canada. The north cascades will be snow covered. The creeks will be running rapid and deep. I'm expecting the first several hundred miles to be especially remote, rugged, and difficult. It will be a blast. I've quit my job and am prepared to hike all the way to Mexico.

You can send me mail along the way. Here is my list of mail drops, along with ETA. Send me postcards and food!

This list is also a good guide for anyone who wants to join me for any period of time. I may move a bit faster; by all reports the PCT is an easier trail than the AT to cover miles in.
